Natural, documentary-style wedding photography for couples celebrating at Whitwell Point, Rutland Water

Rutland Water is one of those places that stops people in their tracks. With big skies, calm waters, and endless space, it’s hard to think of a more dramatic backdrop for a wedding. And when it comes to marquee celebrations, Whitwell Point is the crown jewel — a sweeping stretch of waterside land where you can pitch up, party, and watch the sun set behind the water.

As a Rutland Water wedding photographer, I’ve had the privilege of capturing couples celebrating here. My style is simple: relaxed, natural, and story-driven. No awkward poses, no fuss, just the real moments as they unfold (plus a few sneaky golden-hour portraits, because who doesn’t want that?).

If you’re planning a wedding at Whitwell Point, tying the knot at Normanton Church and heading over here for the reception, here’s everything you need to know — plus a look at how I’d approach photographing your big day.

Why Choose Whitwell Point for Your Rutland Water Wedding

Whitwell Point isn’t your average wedding venue. It’s basically a slice of waterside paradise where you get the views, the space, and the freedom to make the day your own. Unlike a hotel or country house, you’re not boxed in by “this is where we do the cake” rules. Instead, you’ve got open fields, the water on one side, and a marquee that’s yours to style however you like.

It’s private, it’s unique, and it’s got that “wow” factor when your guests arrive and see the water stretching out in front of them.

Marquee Weddings Beside the Water

There’s something about marquees that just works at Rutland Water. They feel informal yet elegant, whether you’re going for rustic trestle tables and festoon lights or something sleek and minimal. You can go big with chandeliers and dance-floors, or keep it stripped-back and let the views do the talking. As a Rutland Water wedding photographer I’ll be sure to capture all of the moments that happen here.

And let’s be honest: a marquee is also your insurance policy against the great British weather. Guests stay dry, the party keeps going, and you still get those magical waterside moments.

Natural, Storytelling Wedding Photography at Rutland Water

My approach is documentary photography. That means I don’t stage the action, I just capture it. I want you to remember what it felt like — the laughter, the nerves, the terrible dancing, the spontaneous moments you didn’t even see happening at the time.

At Rutland Water, that might mean candid shots of your mates clinking glasses outside the marquee, or kids running wild across the grass. It’s the real stuff that tells the story of your day, with the water and the landscape adding the drama in the background.

Sunset Portraits & waterside Moments

One of the best things about a Rutland Water wedding is the light. As the sun dips, the water glows, and you get a natural golden backdrop you just can’t fake. I’ll usually suggest sneaking out for ten minutes around sunset — nothing formal, nothing cringey, just a walk by the water with your new husband or wife, and I’ll hang back with the camera.

You get a breather, I get the kind of portraits you’ll actually want to print. Win-win.

Planning Your Rutland Water Wedding Photography

  • Weather: Have a plan for rain (umbrellas, wellies, or just roll with it)
  • Timings: Sunset is your best friend here — let’s make space for it.
  • Definitely think about how your guests will get to and from the marquee – The Rutland Belle is always a favourite of mine!

Normanton Church – The Iconic Rutland Water Ceremony Spot

Rutland wedding venues Elegant wedding guests enjoying drinks on a boat cruise at BGS Weddings, with the historic Castle on the Lake in the background, capturing a joyful and picturesque wedding celebration.

Of course, we can’t talk about Rutland Water weddings without mentioning Normanton Church. Perched right on the water’s edge, it’s one of the most photographed spots in Rutland — and for good reason. You can have your ceremony inside the church (yes, it’s licensed), then head over to Whitwell Point for the reception.

From a photographer’s point of view, it’s a dream. The building itself is striking, the light is always interesting, and it’s just down the road from the marquee site. Many couples choose this combination: vows in the church, food and dancing by the water. If that’s your plan, check out my dedicated Normanton Church wedding photographer page for more details.

Frequently Asked Questions About Rutland Water Weddings

Planning a wedding at Rutland Water throws up a few practical questions — from “can you actually get married there?” to “what happens if it tips it down with rain?” (spoiler: it’ll still look amazing). I’ve pulled together some of the most common things couples ask me about Whitwell Point, Normanton Church, and Rutland Water wedding photography — hopefully this saves you a bit of Googling.

Yes! The most popular spot is Normanton Church. It’s technically deconsecrated, but licensed for weddings. Many couples combine a ceremony there with a marquee reception at Whitwell Point — vows surrounded by water, then drinks and dancing waterside.

Rain is just part of UK weddings. Some of my favourite photos involve umbrellas, muddy shoes, and guests laughing their way through it. A marquee keeps the party going, and from a photography point of view, overcast skies are actually flattering. Sunshine is nice, but grey skies don’t ruin your Rutland Water wedding photography.

As soon as you’ve locked in your date. Most couples book 12-18 months in advance. Rutland Water spots like Whitwell Point are popular. Last-minute bookings are possible — but it’s best to get in early.

Documentary, candid, natural — whatever word you like best. I don’t do endless posed shots or cheesy grins. I’ll capture the real moments and keep it fun. At Rutland Water that means laughter on the lawn, guests mingling by the water, and those unmissable sunset portraits.
